Case Study

St Cyrus

Picture
The owners of this old farm cottage asked us what we could do with it. They were resigned to rendering it. As it was to be rented out as an Air B&B, we thought it would work better with a complete renovation of the stonework and full lime repointing, to bring it back to how it would have looked originally .

The first job was to remove the old cement pointing without damaging the soft stone.

Secondly, the paint and cement residue from the previous render was removed. This was done by a combination of a needle gun, gentle power-washing and the simple yet laborious process of chipping away with a scutch hammer.

The brick infills were then ground back to accommodate the Lithomex repair material.

Next, the wet Lithomex was applied around the windows and front door.

The Lithomex was then tooled to match the existing stonework.

Finally, the chimneys were repaired, repointed and the whole building was given a wash-down. Below are the four finished elevations.
