Have you ever seen a wall where the pointing is standing proud of the stone, which has worn away to nothing behind it?
This is caused by the use of impervious cement, which is far harder than the stone itself. Over the years the cement has trapped the water in the stone, and as the water freezes and thaws, the stone decays.

We use only the finest quality lime and combine it with a sharp sand of suitable colour and consistency.
Firstly we rake out the old mortar back to a sound base, being careful not to damage the stone. We then press the lime mix into the void, careful to avoid getting it on the face of the stone. Finally we brush off the laitance, as the lime slowly cures, to reveal the aggregates within. We recess the pointing slightly to reveal the edge of each stone for good definition. |
